David Kong of Frame.io, makers of the video production cloud-based collaboration application Frame.io, has produced the best guide to video codecs that I have ever read in How to Choose the Right Codec for Every Project, containing facts and advice I wish had been available when I got back into this video thing.
As has been said, there are codecs and codecs, and not all of them are interchangeable, do exactly the same things or should be used for the same jobs. Kong’s article, not by any means a short one, is broken up into 6 sections:
- The codec you shoot
- The codec you edit
- The codec you color-correct
- The codec you send to VFX
- The codec you export
- The codec you archive
Hats off to Frame.io and Mr Kong for this crucial information.
