Commentary

When cinematographer John Brawley mentioned that he was investigating an IR-cut solution made by RAWLITE on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K forum at EOSHD, I made a mental note to research the problem of infrared pollution in Blackmagic Design’s cameras and possible solutions.

I talked to a rep about the olpf at NAB and they said that they tend to not put filters on their cameras and if they do its always minor because they are obsessed with image quality. Kind of a shame in terms of IR pollution. I remember having to put my Hoya IR cut filter on every freaking lens I owned because the original pocket had such bad IR pollution. I think this cam will have the same issue. … David Altizer

Given that users of the coming Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K will need to use fixed or variable neutral density filters on lenses attached to the camera, as it does not have built-in NDs like its URSA stablemates, it would be great if all NDs came with IR-cut capability, but they do not.

As a self-funded documentary moviemaker working fast and alone on location, variable neutral density filters are a more viable option than fixed value NDs and the last thing I want to do is add yet another layer of glass and filtration on top of my VNDs as Mr Altizer describes above.

Accordingly RAWLITE’s solution may be the bee’s knees provided it produces a version for the  Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K in time for the camera’s projected release in September 2018.

Time will tell.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC 4K) with Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro zoom lens with manual clutch focus, great for manual focussing. I like the longer image-stabilized Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4.0 IS Pro travel zoom for available light daytime walkabout for video and stills supplemented with faster M.Zuiko Pro f/1.2 prime lenses for available darkness work.

Just when I was contemplating what lenses and accessories might be needed to effectively carry and operate the amazing new Blackmagic Design Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K aka BMPCC 4K, this press release arrived from camera bag and backpack maker Think Tank Photo.

Think Tank’s MindShift Gear brand is specially intended for outdoor adventurers who photograph and make movies in all sorts of weather and all kinds of locations, through thick or thin, whether in natural or in my case urban environments.

The game-changing, to use an already overused cliché, BMPCC 4K portable cinema camera does not appear to be weather-resistant so may need transporting in the field in weather-resistant, storm-resistant bags and backpacks along with the equally sensitive equipment needed to make the most of its high end video production capabilities.

Shooting and carrying out initial post-production or DIT (digital imaging technician) duties on BMPCC 4K video footage in the field has certain workflow and hardware demands, and if choosing a shoulder bag rather than backpack then the bag itself should be large enough and protective enough for 15-inch portable computer, SSD or HDD drives and other media, audio recorders and microphones, lenses, color checker or grey card for white balance, small grip items and a portable video tripod as needed.

Accordingly, it would appear that the MindShift Gear 15 may be the best choice of the two MindShift Gear Exposure shoulder bags when using the BMPCC 4K.

At 7 inches wide and with a sloping 5-inch rear touchscreen display, the BMPCC 4K has an unusual shape and size as well as accessory demands, so I will be putting that hypothesis to the test in another article where I look at its actual dimensions as well as an ideal kit of accessories, supplies and lenses for mobile indie documentary work in the field.

Seercam Releases Beautifully Designed Cube 6X Camera Cage for Sony Alpha A6500, A6300, A6000 Super 35 Cameras

Camera accessories maker Seercam has released the Cube 6X, a camera cage for Super 35/APS-C hybrid stills/video cameras in Sony’s Alpha (aka alpha or α) mirrorless interchangeable lens E-mount camera range and, from studying its design and manufacturing details and photographs, it is a must-have for all owners of cameras in the range which includes the α6500α6300 and α6000

Seercam, continuing the tradition the company set under its former brand name Motion9, has produced a cage with all the often unique and always top-tier design and manufacturing values for which the brand has become respected.

Some of Motion9’s first camera cages were created for groundbreaking, popular cameras like Blackmagic Design’s BMPCC aka Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, and Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-GH4.

The Motion9 website appears to no longer be available but I have located some archive images of the company’s cages for the BMPCC, Panasonic Lumix GH4 and Canon EOS 5D Mark III cameras, from left to right below.

It is no secret that I am a fan of Seercam’s cages due to their design and manufacturing quality, and consider them the default go-to cages whenever acquiring a new camera. That consideration is well supported by their sturdiness and ability to safely support attaching all the third-party accessories upon which moviemakers have come to rely.

While it is true that some other cage makers come up with cheaper, lighter and smaller cages, usually designed in the screw-tapped-ribbon style consisting of a narrow aluminium loop in one piece or screwed-together around the camera, Seercam’s unibody cages offer protection and thoughtful design features rarely seen elsewhere.

It is often the little things that make all the difference. In the case of the Cube 6X, that includes Seercam’s customary silver-anodized screw-in righthand finger support, two built-in cold shoes with the option of attaching more as needed, pinky finger support on the base of the cage, and cage-mounted push-button video recording functionality allowing easier and faster access than the sometimes bizarrely positioned video buttons to be found on Sony cameras.

I rarely shoot video without mounting my camera in a cage, the only exception being when I attach a battery grip, and enjoy the extra grip, added protection and counterbalancing of large, heavy zoom lenses that well-designed cages such as Seercam’s afford.

Good grip and balance is even more important in small cameras the size of Sony’s Alpha α6n00 Super 35/APS-C mirrorless range.

The Seercam Cube 6X is available in three configurations, as a cage body-only, or with Classic Plus Handle, or also with Rod Riser 1565.
